Florence
Date: 5/25-5/28/18
Location: Firenze (Florence), Italy
May 25, 2018 was a travel day. In the early afternoon we took a one hour train ride from Rome to Florence.
We arrived at the Airbnb. Across the street we noticed some tents set up, so we strolled over to find a small farmer’s market. We bought a bottle of homemade wine and some cheese.
On May 26, 2018 we went for a walk around Florence and saw the Cupola del Brunelleschi.
The Duomo:
We went through the Piazza della Signoria.
In the Piazza is Palazzo Vecchio, the current town hall in Florence.
On our way back to the apartment there was some artwork set up in the street.
May 27, 2018 we went to Museo Galileo. The building on the right.
The museum, named after the scientist Galileo, had many telescopes, globes, barometers and clocks, as shown below. An example of how amazing Galileo was for his time: in 1610, Galileo discovered that Jupiter has 4 large moons.
The museum also has 2 of Galileo’s fingers and a tooth on display!
May 28, 2018 we went for a walk in a slightly different area of the city.
We saw the Basilica di Santa Croce. Inside are the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Lorenzo Ghiberti.
We went to the San Lorenzo market, hoping to buy some vegetables to cook with dinner, but the section with those vendors is only open 7 am – 2 pm and we arrived too late in the day. The section above that is similar to a food court, but with clear glass windows to show how items are made, and is open 10 am – midnight. There were many options of items to choose from.
Our walk continued into the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella where the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella is.
Our first few days in Florence have been nice and relaxing. Each day the weather forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms, but we have been lucky enough so far to avoid any real weather! (knock on wood)
