Sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo

After a day of hanging out in a cafe we decided to check out the Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset. We were not the only people who had this idea, as there were many others walking up the stairs to the top.

When we arrived, we were able to witness the end of a race. It was the Run & Wine race, which was a 10k and a 5k walk, and after the race, the participants were able to attend a wine tasting for a few hours. If Brian and I had known about it earlier we would have most likely done it.

Although sunset was still 30 minutes away, we came upon a set of stairs that were packed with people sitting and waiting for the sunset.

We were able to get a place by the wall as most people were still moving around and taking pictures, before moving on to another location to try and find a better view.

The sunset was beautiful with the river and city.

The center of the square has a bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David statue.

A short walk up the hill from the Piazzale Michelangelo is the Basilica di San Minato al Monte. With the way the lights were shining on the church, it looked purple. While you would have been able to see the sunset from the church, you would not have been able to see the river.

The Piazzale Michelangelo is a great free option to watch the sunset in Florence, and you’ll get a great workout walking there!
