The Ferry from Visby, Sweden
We left Visby the morning of July 1, 2018 and took the Destination Gotland ferry to Nynäshamn. We booked economy seats on the ferry. The economy section was in the middle of the ship and it is open seating at tables. Most tables had chairs for four people, but there were some smaller two-person tables and you could move the chairs around.
The lounge sections of the ship had assigned chairs set up similar to an airplane. Having a table to put our computers on was nice, as it was bigger than a tray table, but the economy section was really noisy with lots of crying kids. The lounge sections, as long as you were right near where the economy section starts, was quiet. The ferry journey was just over three hours and there was free WiFi.
From Nynäshamn we took a train to Stockholm Södra, the train tracks from Stockholm Södra to Stockholm Central Station are being worked on this summer.
When I booked the ferry we were planning to spend a few days in Stockholm, but we changed our plans and went to Lund instead. Stockholm is still on our list of places to visit, but unless something changes, we will not be there this trip.
The Nightmare Train Ride to Lund
From Stockholm there is a high speed train that gets to Lund in four hours. The train was on schedule for just under two hours. However, after arriving at the next station, the train didn’t move for over an hour. The announcement came over the speakers that there was a train ahead on the tracks that was on fire and it was unknown when our train could continue.
Musical Chairs – With Trains
The train was allowed to go to another station, but it was unknown what would happen from that station. After sitting at the next station for a long time, an announcement was made that we had less than ten minutes to grab our gear and transfer to another train that would be leaving for Lund. We got to the train, found seats and then were told the train didn’t have any food so they gave people time to go buy food. They had a train employee posted outside that you had to tell when you left and came back so they could keep track and not leave without anyone.
People returned from buying food and and we were told to change trains again. We got to that train and were finally moving within ten minutes. There were many more people on the train and we couldn’t find seats. I got a seat in the cafe car, but Brian sat with the bags in the area between two train cars. Instead of going south though, the train went west and after a couple stops we arrived at Göteborg. We then went south and east to Hässleholm before finally getting to Lund at 2:20 am. So the 4-hour train ride turned into 12 hours!
Here is a map of our train journey. The black line is where the train was planning to go, but the red line is where we actually went.
It was 2:20 am when the train arrived in Lund. Here is the view from the train station.
We then had about a half-hour walk to the Airbnb and didn’t see anyone our entire walk.
Our First Day in Lund
Lund has a great botanical garden that includes greenhouses that are free to enter. The greenhouse has different climate sections. This tree has some small flowers that grow out of it.
This was the first time I have seen such a big lilly pad.
This tree has hair. Brian looks intrigued.
This cactus has leaves that that are in rows and there are also thorns between the leaves as well.
This is a Wollemia Nobilis, one of the rarest trees on Earth. The tree species was discovered in 1994 in the Wollemi National Park in Australia. Prior to 1994, the tree was only known by fossil records dating back 200 million years.
This is the Lund University main building. Lund University is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world.
This the the Lund Cathedral.
Inside the cathedral is an astronomical clock that was built in 1380. The top part of the clock shows the phases of the moon and the time of the sun sets. The bottom part is a 200-year calendar showing the zodiac sign, date, day of the week as well as other information. The current board on it is for 1923 – 2123.
The clock chimes twice a day. The horses on top move and then three wise men and their servants pass and bow before the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus in the center.
Lund did not have as many people around as I expected, but it is summer break for the University, so no classes were in session.
