Oahu in 2017

Before launching into our current year (2018) post on Oahu, we figured it would be helpful to give some perspective about what we already did in Hawaii in 2017.

In 2017, Brian and Sue (his coworker) were asked to teach at Maryknoll School in Honolulu, Hawaii for one week. The school has a STEM and Aerospace program and they made a lesson for the Intro to STEM class. STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – also sometimes referred to as STEAM when including Art.

I went to Hawaii with Brian in 2017, and when he wasn’t teaching (he taught 3-5 classes each day), we were able to sight-see.

We went to the Dole Plantation.

At the Dole Plantation, we did the Pineapple Express Train Tour that went by the pineapple fields. Each pineapple plant produces one pineapple and it takes 2 years or more to get the fruit.

The Dole Plantation also has a garden that we walked through.

We couldn’t leave without having some Dole Whip.

We stayed the week in Waikiki at the Hilton Hawaiian village. Along the beach there are many statues.

This is a statue of Duke Kahanamoku. Duke made surfing popular and is known as The Father of Modern Surfing.

We went to the Waikiki Starlight Luau at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

We got seats right by the stage.

I went to the Aloha Tower.

Here is the view of the Aloha Tower.

This is the Iolani Palace, the only official royal residence in the United States. It was the home of King Kalakaua then his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani.

This is the dining room.

The throne room.

This is the view from the lookout at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden.

This is from the Makapu’u Point Lookout.

This is the Halona Blowhole.

View from the Hawaii Kai Lookout.

On one of our last mornings in Hawaii, we got up early to hike up Diamond Head to see the sunrise. The gate to park doesn’t open till 6 am. Even though we were in line to park at 5:45 am there were others in front of us. The trail was packed with people, so we weren’t able to make it all the way to the top for sunrise, but we still got a nice view on the way to the top.

Here is the view from the top looking towards Honolulu.

We hiked the Manoa Falls Trail. The walk was really pretty through the rain forest.

When we did the hike there wasn’t a lot of water at Manoa Falls.

We stopped at Nu’uanu Pali Lookout.

Here is the view looking north.

As you can see, we were able to visit a lot of places on Oahu in 2017. However, because we were only there for one week (and short weekends on each side), we weren’t able to go to other islands, go to Pearl Harbor, and do some other things of interest.

To check out what we were able to add to the list in 2018, continue reading our next post – Oahu 2018.
