Schloss Mirabell and Salzburg Wrap Up
Date: June 11, 2018 – June 17, 2018
Location: Salzburg, Austria
June 14, 2018 – Christmas Museum
On June 14, 2018 we went to the Christmas Museum. There were many advent calendars. As well as a lot about Krampus.
I liked how letters are written and placed on the window sill.
June 15 – Schloss Mirabell
On June 15, 2018 after visiting the Festung Hohensalzburg fortress, we went to Schloss Mirabell on the other side of the river. The palace was built in 1606.
Here is the Pegasus Fountain.
The Dwarf Garden.
This is overlooking the garden with the Grand Fountain in the middle and Festung Hohensalzburg up on the hill.
There are many bridges to get over the Salzach River. This is the Makartsteg pedestrian bridge. It is covered with locks that people have placed on it.
While we were on the bridge we saw a duck boat tour. The vehicle drives on the roads, but then can also go in the water.
June 16, 2018 – The Mozart100 Race
On June 16, 2018 the Mozart100 running race took place and we went to watch the finish. The event included separate races for the following distances:
- 100: 105 km or 65.2 miles
- Ultra: 62.6 km or 38.9 miles
- Marathon: 42 km or 26.2 miles
- Light: 30 km or 18.64 miles
- Half Marathon: 21 km or 13.1.
- City: 12.5 km or 7.7 miles
All of the races ended in Kapitelplatz Square.
The majority of the race is run on trails. Reading about the course, it sounded very difficult and went over multiple mountains.
The building we saw being built the day before was now completed:
The building ended up being the race office. Each participant received a framed picture of themselves finishing, along with a medal.
I was surprised that going through the town, there was nothing mentioning that the race was taking place. If we hadn’t seen the start and finish area being set up the days before, we wouldn’t have even known. The path was not blocked off at all. In the below picture there is a racer making there way around the tourists. Imagine having to do some extra dodging and side-to-side maneuvers after having just run a 100 km race!
The picture above is the final turn into the finish stretch. Racers from all over Europe and even a few people from the US were participants. Some races looked like they didn’t know which way to go, so I moved to the corner so I could point them in the direction of the finish.
Here is the finishing stretch. We found out after I took the photo that the person finishing is from the US.
Here is the 3rd place finisher of the 100 km race at 10 hours and 32 minutes. Damian Hall, a famous runner and writer from Great Britain, took 2nd place. The winner, a native from Austria, was Florian Grasel in 10 hours, 26 minutes, and 36 seconds.
Our Airbnb in Salzburg, Austria
For our time in Salzburg, we stayed at an Airbnb that had a patio and a great view.
We really enjoyed Salzburg and definitely will plan on returning sometime soon.
